Fully redesigned while maintaining its signature speedster heritage, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will soon be on its way to Cox Mazda, your certified Tampa-area Mazda dealer at 3101 Cortez Road West in Bradenton. Returning with everything from a striking new exterior to a more balanced weight distribution and more sophisticated performance, it’s no wonder so many people are so anxious for the new Miata to arrive. Here we’ll take a closer glance at what drivers have to look forward to.
For the 2016 model year, Mazda redesigned the Mazda MX-5 Miata with one eye on its distinct heritage and another eye on the exciting future of Mazda racing:
- Bold Design: There won’t be any doubt that you’re looking at a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata when you see it, but there are some exciting changes on the way. It looks like the new Mazda MX-5 Miata will be adding some muscular lines along with a shorter and wider frame. The result is a roadster with an imposing look that matches its inspired performance.
- Weight Distribution: The new engine on the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be moved back closer to the center of the vehicle, putting it closer in line with the Mazda’s ongoing attempts to achieve an ideal 50/50 weight distribution for superior handling and performance.
SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY: For the first time ever, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will receive the entire SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY suite. This means direct injection to the engine, a fine-tuned gear ratio distribution to the transmission, an updated suspension, and a lighter, more aerodynamic frame. The result of all this should be a Miata that delivers a better performance while also achieving superior fuel economy.
While preorder for the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata are going on now at Cox Mazda in Bradenton, we still don’t have the exact word on when we’ll start to see it arriving on our lot. Get the latest scoop on the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata release date by contacting Cox Mazda today.

We could spend all day talking about the release of the fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, but it’s not until you see this vehicle’s confident new look that you’ll really begin to understand what we’re getting at. Luckily, we’ve got some photos on hand.
Auto Show News
On September 3, 2014, Mazda held an event revealing the exterior and interior styling of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. The vehicle is very clean and sits much lower to the ground, giving it a much more aggressive stance. It’s expected to weight around 2200 pounds, about 200 pounds less than the last generation. The model on display had a soft top, and Mazda has since revealed the hard top.
Mazda next unveiled the new aluminum SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY chassis at the 2014 New York Auto Show and turned a lot of heads. At that event, Robert Davis, senior vice president, U.S. Operations, Mazda North American Operations, said that “the dedication of the R&D and Design teams to honor the vehicle’s dynamic heritage and globally-recognizable features is evident from the chassis’ structural blueprint, and will undoubtedly translate into what we believe will be a remarkable production car.”
At the 2015 Chicago Auto Show in February of 2015, Mazda showed us even more about the Miata. Mazda North American Operation vehicle line manager, Rob McLaughlin, said that Mazda wanted to “reverse the trend” of cars getting heavier “through modeling the Miata after our 2016 Global MX-5 Cup car—reducing the weight, making it shorter, pulling the engine back and lowering it, which has allowed for more head and leg room.”
Since the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata hasn’t yet been officially released, there aren’t many reviews available yet. If the Edmunds.com review is any sign of what’s to come, though, then we have a lot to look forward to:
“Neither exotic nor supercar, the [2016 Mazda] MX-5 Miata remains Mazda’s halo car, a roadster that distills the automaker’s philosophy of fun, inspired driving into an ultra-compact two-seater. For 2016, the [2016 Mazda] MX-5] Miata will be smaller and lighter, but should remain one of the most rewarding convertibles you can buy.” -Edmunds
