The 2014 Mazda3 5-Door vs. the 2014 Volkswagen Golf

When it comes to mid-size hatchbacks, you’re going to have a tough time convincing Bradenton and Tampa drivers to pick anything other than the 2014 Mazda3 5-Door, and it’s with good reason. Here at Cox Mazda, we’re clearly big fans of the Mazda3 in all its versions, but we agree with area drivers that it is one of the best hatchbacks on the road today.

The mid-size hatchback segment of the auto market is pretty crowded these days, though, and old contenders like the Volkswagen Golf are still being made in 2014. Let’s see if the Golf still has what it takes to compete.

Mazda Means Money Saved

You might not realize it when you look at the sticker prices of these two vehicles, but if you choose to look a little deeper, it becomes clear that Mazda offers the better value.

Both vehicles have the same retail price—$19,995—making them an excellent comparison against one another for whether or not you get your money’s worth. If you want to equip them with comparable features, the Mazda3 goes up to $20,790 while the Golf hits $21,315. That’s $525 worth of features that either already come on the Mazda or cost less on it.

The savings don’t stop there, either. Fuel economy is one of the most important aspects of a modern car, and the Mazda3 5-Door is rated at 40 highway mpg and 30 city mpg. We could understand if the Golf were a bit lower, but it sits at 31 highway mpg and 24 city mpg, which feels just plain inexcusable for a 2014 model.

The Mazda3 Gives You More

2014 Mazda3 5-DoorWould you like a navigation or telematics system on your next car? Well, you can add them right on to the entry-level Mazda3 5-Door. The Golf, on the other hand, doesn’t allow these features on their entry-level model. The Mazda3 gives you access to more standard and optional features than the Golf, hands down.

And you get more space too. Drivers considering a hatchback are often concerned about getting the most out of it, including cargo storage. The Mazda3 offers 20.2 cubic feet of cargo storage to the Golf’s 15.2 cubic feet.
