2016 Mazda CX-3 vs. 2016 Fiat 500X

At a time of automotive innovation and changes in consumer demands, it’s not surprising to see development among small crossovers. This year, Mazda enters the subcompact crossover segment with the all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3. Offering the styling of an SUV with the sporty driving dynamics and impressive fuel economy of a modern hatchback, the Mazda CX-3 is already turning heads. The 2016 Fiat 500X is another all-new subcompact crossover worth consideration, but a closer look shows how the 2016 Mazda CX-3 proves the better choice.

Performance

Both the 2016 Mazda CX-3 and the 2016 Fiat 500X come with standard four-cylinder engines that develop competitive power under the hood, and both are offered with available all-wheel drive for a more confident experience behind the wheel, though the Fiat 500X base trim isn’t offered with all-wheel drive. However, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 crossover’s sporty suspension and precise steering make for a more dynamic experience behind the wheel, while it reaches 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, beating out the 2016 Fiat 500X’s 9.0 seconds time in the same test.

Fuel Economy

In spite of its quicker acceleration and dynamic driving experience, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is also more fuel-efficient than the 2016 Fiat 500X. Equipped with a standard 2.0L four-cylinder engine, this model utilizes Mazda’s exclusive SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY to help it achieve up to an EPA-estimated 35 mpg highway and 29 mpg city. Meanwhile, with its base 1.6L four-cylinder engine, the Fiat 500X only gets up to an EPA-estimated 34 mpg highway and 25 mpg city. When fitted with the available 2.4L four-cylinder engine, fuel economy drops to a maximum EPA estimate of 31 mpg highway and 22 mpg city.

Features

As with all-new models, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 and the 2016 Fiat 500X are both equipped with a wide range of standard features, including Bluetooth connectivity, full-power features, and steering-wheel-mounted cruise control. However, the Mazda CX-3 gets a number of amenities that are either unavailable or come as cost-added options on the Fiat 500X, including:

  • Telematics system
  • Rearview camera
  • 7-inch touchscreen interface
  • Pandora Internet radio
  • Cargo area tie downs
  • Aluminum alloy wheels

Price

In spite of all this, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 still comes in with a more affordable starting price than the 2016 Fiat 500X.

  • 2016 Mazda CX-3 Price: MSRP from $19,960
  • 2016 Fiat 500X: MSRP from $20,000
