The 2016 Kia Sportage and the 2016 Mazda CX-3 are both small crossovers with plenty to offer Tampa and Sarasota customers. While the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is a brand new entry into the subcompact crossover class, the Kia Sportage is a compact crossover that competes more directly with the slightly larger 2016 Mazda CX-5. As a result, you can expect the 2016 Mazda CX-3 to be smaller inside and out, with better fuel economy, and a lower price point. See how they compare here, so you can figure out which one will be better for your needs.

Price and Value

The Sportage is simply more expensive than the 2016 Mazda CX-3. For 2016, the Sportage will set you back at minimum $23,045 MSRP including the destination charge. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 will set you back at minimum $20,860 MSRP with destination fee. That’s a difference of $2,185, which is enough to upgrade the 2016 Mazda CX-3 to a higher level trim or to add on all-wheel drive.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 wins out when it comes to fuel economy. If saving money at the pump or lowering your carbon footprint is a priority, then the 2016 Mazda CX-3 is clearly the better choice — in fact, the contest isn’t even close! Take a look at the EPA estimates:

  • The Kia Sportage earns up to 21 mpg/city and 28 mpg/highway based on EPA estimates with front wheel drive and six-speed automatic transmission, or up to 19 mpg/city and 26 mpg/highway with all-wheel drive. If you upgrade to a higher level trim, you can expect even worse fuel economy: the Sportage SX earns only 20 mpg/city and 26 mpg/highway in front wheel drive, or 19 mpg/city and 25 mpg/highway with all-wheel drive.
  • The 2016 Mazda CX-3 earns one of the best EPA estimates in any SUV segment, with up to 29 mpg/city and 35 mpg/highway for 31 mpg/combined with front wheel drive, and up to 27 mpg/city and 32 mpg/highway with all-wheel drive across all trim levels when mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

Safety and Security

The Kia Sportage earned mixed safety scores from the government National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It earned a 5-Star overall rating with all-wheel drive, and a second-best 4-Star overall rating with front wheel drive, due to poor performance in the Rollover Safety test. The 2016 Mazda CX-3 earned a best possible 5-Star rating in all crash tests conducted by that organization.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is also available with the high-tech i-ACTIVSENSE® suite of preventative safety technologies. This includes features like a forward collision warning system with automatic emergency braking, a lane departure warning system, a blind spot monitor, a rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beam controls. Not a single one of those features is offered on the Kia.
