Mazda Miata MX-5 Vs Ford Mustang
The 2012 Mazda Miata MX-5 vs. the Ford Mustang
One of the most exciting aspects of the modern auto industry is the fact that driving a fun, sporty roadster has never been more affordable—and two of the most competitive options for Palmetto, FL residents looking to enjoy the sunshine are the 2012 Mazda Miata and the 2012 Ford Mustang. While both offer a tremendous vehicle to potential buyers, there’s no question that that the Miata is the better value; with comparable performance, better fuel economy, and more accommodating interior, the Miata is definitely the smart driver’s preferred sports car.
Powertrain and Performance
To the untrained eye, with its 2.0L 167 hp incline-4, the Mazda’s 2012 MX-5 Miata Touring might seem a little weak compared to the 3.7L, 305 hp V6 of the 2012 Ford Mustang Convertible, but when it comes to the actual test track, the numbers don’t seem to matter very much. With it’s European-style compact body and weighing 1000lbs less than the Mustang, the Miata has been engineered to go 0–60 in only 6.9 seconds—only a little more than a second behind the Mustang—and with Bilstein shocks and a limited-slip differential available through the touring suspension packages, the Miata does it while delivering an engaging driving experience that the Mustang simply doesn’t match.
While it’s true that most drivers expect to take a hit on fuel efficiency when driving a sports car, it’s nice to know which model rewards you more: and it so happens it’s the Miata that does. With an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 24 mpg, the Miata delivers more at the pump than the 22-mpg-economy of the Mustang.
With features like optional Navigation systems, leather-wrapped steering wheels, trip computer, and CD changers coming standard on the Miata, the fact that the Mustang doesn’t offer any of such accoutrements makes the Miata definitely the more rewarding driving experience.
All it takes is the fact that Mazda’s 2012 MX-5 Miata costs more than $2,000 less than the 2012 Ford Mustang V6 to make the Miata the hands-down winner.
