MAZDA Logo History and Design Evolution

Some brands see very few changes to their logo over the years, but that’s definitely not the case with Mazda. Instead, the Mazda car logo has continued to evolve over the last hundred years — from 1934’s old Mazda logo in cursive script to today’s V-shaped wing emblem and minimalistic typeface. Read below for a closer look at the evolution of the Mazda symbol:

• 1934 to 1954 — The Mazda car symbol was registered in the 1930s, first appearing on three-wheel trucks.
• 1936 to 1959 — The next Mazda logo represents both an “M”, and the flowing water of the brand’s hometown, Hiroshima. The form is repeated three times, for “Mazda Motor Manufacturer.”
• 1951 to 1972 — The next Mazda logo was adopted in 1951 when Tsuneji Matsuda took over as the third president of Mazda.
• 1954 to 1974 — This all-caps version was created to adapt the Mazda logo for overseas markets. In all, it was registered in 21 countries!
• 1959 to 1974 — This Mazda logo was seen on the Mazda R360 coupe and other passenger cars.
• 1975 to 1997 — The sleek lowercase typeface (with a capital D) made its debut with this Mazda symbol.
• 1997 to 2015 — Very close to today’s Mazda symbol, this version features V-shaped wings that symbolize growth and improvement.
• 2015 to Present — Today’s Mazda logo, in Mazda Blue, represents the brand’s continuous quest toward higher quality and sophistication.
