The Mazda RX-7, one of the most unique sports cars to ever hit the market, is coming back sometime in 2015 or 2016. Mazda is still holding back most of the details, but expect the 2015 Mazda RX-7 to combine all that was great about past builds with some exciting new advances. Once it debuts, you can find it at Cox Mazda near Sarasota and Tampa. This is what we know so far, including the return of the rotary engine.

Mazda has been one of the few major automakers to fully realize and advance the potential of the rotary engine. Past RX-7s have utilized this unique powertrain technology to great effect, and reports indicate that a whole new type of rotary engine is in development for the forthcoming RX-7.
We don’t have the RX-7 rotary engine specs yet, but expect this engine to put out around 250 hp and deliver superior fuel economy. It will not come with a turbocharger, but will still deliver 600 cc per rotor over an expected two rotors. That would make its power output roughly equivalent to a 2.4L conventional engine, but with much less weight. We also expect the enhancements that Mazda is currently working on to help extend the life of the engine past what previous RX-7s were capable of.
The RX-7 is being built with the same design philosophy as the upcoming 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata, but it will have its own distinctive style. Early drawings suggest that it will have an elongated front end that makes the vehicle look like it’s perpetually moving forward. Reports from Mazda have indicated retro styling is unlikely, even though the design is being overseen by the son of the creator of the original RX-7. However it ends up looking expect the new RX-7 to be bold, unique, and impossible not to notice.
Even though we don’t know many of the details yet, every indicator suggests that Mazda is fully committed to this model, and to pushing its rotary engine in exciting new directions.
