Car Battery Installation Steps

Are you planning on installing a car battery at your Palmetto home? If so, it’s essential for you to have all of the proper tools and to follow our instructions to ensure your battery works properly and offers you a long lifespan. Before you learn how to install a car battery at home in Brandon, gather the following tools and open the hood to your vehicle:

• Wrench
• Battery cleaning solution
• Your new battery
• Wire brush
• Pliers
• Anti-corrosion spray

After you have your tools ready, simply follow the instructions below:

1. Turn your engine off and engage the parking brake. Open your hood and locate the battery.
2. Loosen the nut connecting holding the black (negative) cable onto the battery with your wrench.
3. Remove the cable once the nut is loose. If the nut is stuck, don’t use force or try to pry it off, as this can harm your connection to the battery. Carefully wiggle the nut back and forth or use an applicable lubricant to release it.
4. Use a similar procedure to remove the red (positive) cable from its terminal.
5. Loosen and then remove the clamps that holding your old battery in place.
6. Now that the battery is ready to be removed, lift the battery out with both hands. Car batteries are heavy and dropping it could cause it to break and leak or you could injure yourself.
7. Use anti-corrosion spray to remove any corrosion from the battery tray and clamps. If you don’t have anti-corrosion spray you can use a baking soda and water solution.
8. Take the wire brush and clean off the battery cable connectors with the same cleaning solution.
9. Install the new battery by placing it in the battery tray and tightening your car’s hold-down clamps.
10. Spray the anti-corrosion solution on both the positive (+) and negative (-) terminal of the new battery before you connect the cables. This will prevent corrosion, fight against parasitic drain, and ultimately extend battery life.
11. Attach the red (positive) battery cable first, then the black (negative) cable.
12. Check the connections and the battery to make sure everything is secure.
13. Start the car to ensure the battery is working properly. If you find that your new battery doesn’t work shortly afterward, there might be an issue with your alternator or electrical system.
