The 2014 Mazda3 Safety Ratings Make it a Great Pick for Families

Safety has always been an integral part of Mazda design. Redesigning the 2014 Mazda3 gave Mazda engineers a chance to take the frame, the very core of the vehicle, back to square one, and build something that was simultaneously lighter and better at distributing crash energy.

A Top Safety Pick+

The result is the both sedan and hatchback versions of the 2014 Mazda3 have one of the market’s best safety ratings. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, a non-profit that specializes in vehicle crash-testing, has honored both models with a Top Safety Pick+ safety rating

2014 Mazda3 Safety Ratings

To be considered a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn top marks in a moderate overlap front cash test, a side crash test, a roof strength test, and a head restraint test. The vehicle must also earn at least an “acceptable” rating in the small overlap front test. These criteria alone qualify a vehicle for the “Top Safety Pick” award. To earn the “+,” vehicles must also be available with front crash prevention system.

Models equipped with the safety detect system meet and exceed all criteria. A rare feat, the Mazda3 earned top marks in the small front overlap test. The test is meant to simulate a crash where only a front corner of the vehicle crashes into rigid object, such as a pole, tree, or corner of a building. The small front overlap is typically considered more dangerous because the same amount of crash force is concentrated in a smaller area. The Mazda3 demonstrated it is able to keep the cabin intact and protect passengers.
