Are Your Tires Safe?

June 3rd, 2013 by

Besides your brakes, your tires are probably one of your vehicle’s most important safety features. Tires that are in good condition and have proper tread depth help you to keep in control while driving and stopping in a short distance. This is especially important in slippery conditions. In today’s blog, we’ll go over tire maintenance and how you can check if your tires need replacing.

Regular Wheel Alignments and Tire Rotations

When you walk, you probably walk unevenly. This causes one side of your shoe to wear faster than the other. If you don’t change your shoes after they’ve become sufficiently worn, you could risk hurting your feet or legs. Your car is the same way. Despite precise maintenance, your car will always tend to lean on one side of wheel more than the other, causing uneven tire way. This means you should always get alignments to help lessen this uneven wearing.

Tire rotations help to even out the wear on the tire by moving it to a different wheel. This gives the chance to wear more on the other side, extending the overall life of the tire, and saving you money.  Look in your service manual for when your vehicle manufacturer recommends that you get these maintenance procedures done.

Checking for Safe Tread Depth

As your tires wear, tread depth lessens. There’s an easy way to check if you’re still in the safe zone.

  • Take an average American quarter and stick it in a tire tread so Washington’s head is pointed toward the center of the wheel.
  • If you can’t see the top of his head, you’re safe. Actually, the less you can see the better.
  • If you can see the top of his head, your treads are getting dangerously thin. Think hard about a tire replacement.
