Safety tups for your child’s car seat

At Cox Mazda near Sarasota we know that parents always want their children to be safe. In fact, that’s probably every parent’s top priority when shopping for a car, and we understand. Cox Mazda is a family-run business and safety is at the top of our list too. In Sarasota, there are thousands of auto accidents every year, and despite being a safe and responsible driver, sometimes it’s impossible to avoid a fender bender. Here are some tips for keeping your children as safe as possible when they’re in the car.

Special Seats and Seatbelts Help Keep Children Safe

Cars are effectively designed for use by adults. The seats, seatbelts, and airbags are in the right places to protect a fully-grown person in the event of a crash, which is why children need different kinds of seats to make the car adapt to their smaller size.

For smaller children, it is absolutely imperative that they are in the right kind of car seat and that the car seat is correctly used. For children under 2, use a rear-facing child seat. In fact, it is best to keep your child in a rear-facing child safety seat in the back seat for as long as possible. Make sure that the semi-reclined seat is at around a 45 degree angle, and ensure that all the belts are fastened and the child isn’t able to tamper with them.

If your child has outgrown the weight or height limitations of their seat, it may be time to change to a booster seat. Children always need a booster seat until they can pass the Safety Belt Fit Test. Usually a child will need a booster seat to properly fit a lap and shoulder belt until they are roughly 4-feet-9-inches tall and around 100 pounds. Children typically reach this size between ages 8 and 12.
