How to Tell if You Need New Brakes
Find out if your brakes need replacing by looking out, or listening, for these signs that you need to take your vehicle to the nearest dealership for a new part.
- Check your brake pads
There should be at least ¼ inch of pad between the rotor and brake. If there is any less, than you’ll need to get them replaced ASAP.
- Listen for screeching sound when braking
When you hear this noise, it’s the indicator telling you to schedule an appointment to have your brake pads checked and possibly replaced.
- Pay attention to reduced responsiveness
If your pedal is getting further and further to the floor before you come to a stop, there might be a leak in your braking system. This is an important sign to watch for. You can also notice this leak by placing a piece of cardboard under your vehicle and watching for leak spots.
- Listen for Grinding
If you hear this metallic scraping noise, you’ve worn down your brake pads. This can scratch other vital parts of your brakes, making it more serious to replace.
- Feel for vibrations
Vibrations through your brake pedal either mean that your rotors are possibly warped or
that your tires aren’t aligned correctly.
