The Mazda6 Pushes Performance Limits With its New Engine Technology

September 14th, 2012 by

At Cox Mazda we’re excited to introduce the new Mazda6 for 2012. This new model is impressive for its muscular performance, array of great trim options, and dynamic styling. Perhaps the most interesting and game changing aspect of the Mazda6 is the way the engine is designed, incorporating exciting new electric technology to make a conventional engine that is both more fuel efficient and operates at a high performance level. Cox Mazda is happy to be able to provide this option in this very practical, well-rounded sedan that should appeal to every type of driver.

The new powertrain technology that the Mazda6 sedan runs on is called SKYACTIV-G, and it changes the rules for an internal combustion engine. There are a number of ways Mazda has rethought their engine design. First is by achieving a superior compression ratio. In fact, Mazda’s 14.0:1 fuel compression ratio is the highest in any production car and helps to improve efficiency by as much as 15 percent.

In addition to a better combustion engine, the Mazda6’s i-ELOOP technology charges up a capacitor whenever the driver uses the brakes. This energy is then used to power all of the electrical mechanisms in the car, allowing the engine to work less hard providing electricity.

This leads to increases in performance and gas mileage. The Mazda6 i models run on a 2.5L four-cylinder that provides 170 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque, while the Mazda6 s models have a bigger 3.7L V6 with 272 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. This leads to up to 30 mpg highway in the most efficient models, while retaining a very responsive and quick ride.

When these improvements to the powertrain design are combined with a much lighter and more rigid chassis and body, the Mazda6 adds up to a package that is fun and responsive without sacrificing efficiency.
