The 2013 Mazda3: Three Great Options

May 10th, 2013 by

One of my first car buying experiences involved a Mazda3. Not for me, for an old girlfriend. Let’s call her Annie. We were both recently out of college, she with a fresh job and me stagnantly unemployed.  After Annie’s old Honda Civic died, she decided that she would treat herself and buy a new car.

Our research skills finely honed by four-grueling years of college, we carefully weighed different vehicle choices against one another; comparing prices, fuel economies, standard features, and cargo space. But even before we started our research, Annie was drawn to the Mazda3.

Annie loved the unique styling of the sporty Mazda3, and the simultaneously playful and aggressive fascia. After we finished comparing various makes and models, the Mazda3’s affordable price tag, fuel economy, and features only solidified it further as her choice.

Annie went with the 4-door hatchback model, but there are two other styles available for the current 2013 Mazda3: the Mazda3 4-door and the Mazdaspeed3. Each has a few key differences, but all deliver the same strong styling and performance that Mazda is known for.

Here’s how they breakdown.

The Mazda3 4-Door

Styled like a compact sedan, the 2013 Mazd3 4-door model has the lowest starting price of the three, with a suggested MSRP of around $17,000. It features:

  • 155 hp
  • Highway fuel economy of 39 mpg
  • 11.8 cubic feet of cargo room

The Mazda3 5-Door

Starting around $20,000 this 5-door hatchback looks fun and has plenty of cargo space. The hatchback offers:

  • 155 hp
  • Highway fuel economy of 38 mpg
  • 17 cubic feet of cargo room

The Mazdaspeed3

Mazda built the 2013 Mazdaspeed3 for the true performance enthusiast. While it gets lower fuel economy than the other two models, it makes up for it tenfold in power and handling:

  • 263 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque
  • Highway fuel economy of 25 mpg
  • 11.8 cubic feet of cargo room
